Why Women Need Their Own Insurance Policies

If you’re reading this and you don’t have your own primary health benefits or life insurance, this is your sign to apply now. You may think that being insured on your partner’s insurance plan is good enough, but if you’re considering a divorce, it’s time to think again.

If you’re not the primary insurance holder, you’re likely going to be removed from your former partner’s policy once you start going through the divorce process. This means that you’ll end up needing to start over on getting insured at a later stage in life, which can be more difficult or costly (especially if you already have any health issues).

The reality is that in our patriarchal society, insurance policies tend to over-protect our men and under-protect our women. If your new health benefits aren’t able to cover all of your needs, then you need to have a discussion with your former partner about how this can be addressed in your settlement. When it comes to life insurance policies, make sure that there is safeguarding for yourself — even though you may still think of your former partner as the primary breadwinner, you are now the primary breadwinner for your new family unit, and you need to ensure you are protected, too, for both yourself and your children.
